Browser Wars
Damn! This is the third time I have had to retype this!
An age and a half ago I decided to try an early beta of Mozilla. It was Release 0.16 from memory. It sucked. Not just a bit either. So with a loud cry of "eh" I went back to IE6. When 0.18 came out it was actually quite useable so I made the switch. Why? Because middle mouse click would open the html link in a new window. This was such a leap forward for speed viewing I never went back. Since then I have used Mozilla up to release 1.4. I have now changed.

Welcome New Challenger!

I now find myself addicted to Mozilla Firebird 0.61
Firebird is a spin off project from the "core" mozilla. It has no integrated mail/editor/chat/other junk. It is, however, designed to take plugins in an intelligent (if still immature) way.

As a result the following features I use every day from a heavily modified (via Extensions) version.

  • Tabbed mode (a'la Opera)
  • User Agent Switching (pretend to be Internet Explorer, Netscape 4 or even Opera)
  • Gestures (Thank you Peter Molyneux and Opera)
  • Hidden menus To make the most viewable area on web pages
  • Open in tabs which is great to read 4 comics at a go
  • Download progress bars cos now I have all these neato tabs and windows, the last thing I want is for downloads to launch as yet more popups!
  • Download sorting So I can sort all of that cr@p that I download with some degree of automation
  • Flash Click to View This makes all flash into a selectable button so it doesn't auto launch. Great for blocking annoying ads
  • Popup Blocking but I can always allow the popup if I like
  • Google Bar The best damn search engine got more integrated.

I haven't downloaded it yet but there are even extensions to help manage your blog.

Of course I need SOMETHING to get my mail.

Enter Mozilla Thunderbird
Yup, it's the mail section peeled off and cleaned up. Its' big advantage? Bayesian Spam filters, which get smarter!
As I am getting over 100 items of spam a day now, this is a must have feature.

More info on much of this at Mozilla.Org

Bwahahahaha! The Power, The POWER!

Ehem.
