Letting the Magic Smoke Out...
Just blew up two Uninterupptable Power Supplies.
I had just finished working on a new PC for our server room. I wamted it to be on UPS. I like for each device to have its own UPS to remove as much chance of a single failure taking down the entire server cluster.
So I unplug a couple of non essential devices from one of the wall sockets. I plug in a double adapter. I plug in an IEC (kettle/computer) Plug. I plug the UPS in. It doesn't have anything plugged into it.
BANG! A blue flash lights the inside of the UPS and I can smell smoke. Uh Oh.
I unplug it. I know this unit was recently serviced, so I figure we have a failure. Oh well. It happens. I label the UPS as "Magic Smoke has Escaped", tape over all the power inlets/outlets and put it aside. Luckily I have another of the same model in my stack of spares. I go and fetch it. I plug it in.
BANG! A blue flash lights the inside of the UPS and I can smell smoke. Crap!
So I unplug the double adapter AND the IEC plug and throw them in the bin. Maybe I'll hold off plugging that new unit for a few days...

Woooh! That is savage. I can't even think of an adaptor/cored fault that would react like that.
Perhaps active was cross connected to the box earth in the cord?
Ummm ... you did check that the UPS power supplies wern't set to 110V didn't you?

Naah, although at the end of the day my boss informed me taht MAYBE they were two faulty ones he'd had that he'd put BACK INTO my stock, without labelling them faulty or warning me...
