Kill Bill Vol 1
WARNING! This post includes SPOILERS!
Finally got to see "Kill Bill Vol 1" yesterday. Saw it in "neck-strain-o-vision" courtesy of being in the front row of cinema 3 of the Piccadilly. It was a bit busy in there! So what did I think? I liked it! Certainly not the best at any single thing it tried to do except one.
- I have seen better martial arts: Eg, Wing Chun or Volcano High
- I have seen better post-modern pieces: Eg, Run, Lola, Run
- I have seen more violent movies: Eg BrainDead or Battle Royale
- I haven't seen a better Homage to Hong Kong / Japanese cinema the. Mr Tarantino got that award all to himself. It was also so clearly a homage to Westerns.
Quentin is now going head to head with Kevin Smith for biggest fanboy in all Hollywood, isn't he? Good on both of them! I admire that Geeks are taking on and over Hollywood. Did we ever doubt?
Bits I really liked?
- The Limo with sword wielding Biker outriders.
- The Psycho Schoolgirl. (She was picked up by Tarantino because he liked her so much in Battle Royale apparently)
- The hum all the "real" Katana make when they are unsheathed. (Little touches like this make a movie just so much better!)
- The fate of the final Crazy 88'er. (Pure comedy I tells yer!)
- The name of the breakfast cereal in the opening chapter (look closely next time you see it :-)
- The "book" metaphor used throughout.
I would see it again.
